{"id":11865,"date":"2020-08-27T08:26:07","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T06:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mwehle.eu\/wp\/?p=11865"},"modified":"2020-08-27T08:26:45","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T06:26:45","slug":"his-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mwehle.eu\/wp\/?p=11865","title":{"rendered":"His place"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/aug\/27\/new-zealand-media-put-christchurch-gunman-in-his-place-with-focus-on-victims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guardian<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>New Zealand media put Christchurch gunman in his place with focus on victims<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, after the gunman was sentenced to an unprecedented life in jail without parole, Ardern reiterated her commitment to never speak the terrorist\u2019s name, saying he\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/aug\/27\/five-million-brothers-and-sisters-relief-mixes-with-joy-in-christchurch\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">deserved \u201ca lifetime of complete and utter silence\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The coverage changed tone on Thursday, when the sentence came down and the media had the opportunity to celebrate with the victims of the atrocity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2026<\/p>\n<p>At RNZ, director of news Richard Sutherland says his team have \u201cstrictly\u201d adhered to the media agreement in their coverage. \u201cWe were never going to let him use any of his court appearances as a platform for espousing his unsavoury views,\u201d Sutherland says.<\/p>\n<p>Mediaworks director of news, Sarah Bristow, is singing from the same hymn sheet. \u201cThe coverage of this case is immensely important \u2026 but that doesn\u2019t mean we are here to be used to perpetuate hateful ideology,\u201d Bristow said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were extremely wary of the possibility Tarrant may try to use the news media and our coverage of the case to disseminate his white supremacist beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Ardern stopped using the gunman\u2019s name, New Zealanders followed suit en masse. \u2018He is not one of us\u201d Ardern said, and Kiwis took her message to heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Overall says she has noticed an \u201can absence of public mourning\u201d that she thinks may be deliberate too, \u201crefusing him haunting our space\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat muting is quite pronounced and significant,\u201d Overall says, of the public mood in New Zealand this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that demonstrates something the public has absorbed and is embodying and practising Jacinda\u2019s mandate, even though the journalists are naming him, the public seems to want to continue the practice of not naming \u2013 not humanising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victims, too, have adopted the Ardern practice, using words such as \u201closer\u201d and \u201ctrash of society\u201d and \u201cnothing\u201d and \u201cmonster\u201d to address him, rather than his name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2026<\/p>\n<p>With his act of mass atrocity, Tarrant \u2013 a loner, a misfit \u2013 sought notoriety and fame \u2013 as stated in his manifesto.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guardian: New Zealand media put Christchurch gunman in his place with focus on victims On Thursday, after the gunman was sentenced to an unprecedented life in jail without parole, Ardern reiterated her commitment to never speak the terrorist\u2019s name, saying &hellip;
