November ist „Monat der Wahrheit“<\/strong><\/span>
\nAus dem Bundeskabinett \u00e4u\u00dferte sich auch Bundesfinanzminister Olaf Scholz (SPD) zu den Beschl\u00fcssen. Er schrieb auf Twitter, dass der November „ein Monat der Wahrheit“ werde. Die steigenden Infektionszahlen machten ein hartes Gegensteuern notwendig, um die zweite Corona-Welle zu brechen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Die Pandemie stelle die Gesellschaft auf eine Bew\u00e4hrungsprobe: medizinisch, politisch, wirtschaftlich und sozial, so Merkel. Deutschland werde dem nur mit Zusammenhalt und der Bereitschaft zum Transparenten Austausch begegnen k\u00f6nnen. Nur „miteinander und f\u00fcreinander“ komme Deutschland durch „diese historische Krise“, sagte Merkel. „Der Winter wird schwer. Vier lange schwere Monate. Aber er wird enden.“\u00a0 Die Kanzlerin lobte die Arbeit des Robert-Koch-Instituts und erinnerte daran, die Corona-Warn-App zu nutzen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I honestly don’t feel I know what the most appropriate rhetoric is for political leaders to use with regard to the pandemic, whether locally in Berlin or Philadelphia, or nationally. It is<\/em> apparent, though, that frequently the phrases used make claims which are not falsifiable and so which are useless to me personally in helping me understand what’s going on, and what to expect. This in itself, that is, the fact that leaders are spouting useless nonsense in the face of a deadly worldwide pandemic communicates a message all its own of course.<\/p>\n

„November is the month of truth“: so Germany is faced with its time of reckoning, a period which will be one calendar month long. The truth of Germany’s mettle will here be revealed. Will the country pass or fail its test? The time period is simply one the government has chosen for its current application of societal restrictions. The government will surely be monitoring the effects daily throughout the month. It announces that conditions will be revisited in two weeks time. What happens after November? In what possible way can anyone imagine that the testing period will then be past? Is December to be a Month of Truth after November’s Month of Truth? January? This is utter nonsense. It may be reassuring to people though. It’s the kind of thing people are used to hearing.<\/p>\n

Like Scholz, Merkel also proposes that Germany is faced with a test. Again, how long will the test be? More importantly though, what are the criteria for passing? What are the conditions of failure? This is similar to the trite „on the brink“. With no victory conditions specified success or failure can (and will) be arbitrarily declared as is politically expedient.<\/p>\n

Merkel dankte daher den L\u00e4nderchefs und -chefinnen f\u00fcr das konstruktive Mitwirken. Sie verwies auf R\u00fcckfrage auch darauf, dass Gottesdienste von den Ma\u00dfnahmen nicht betroffen seien. Diese k\u00f6nnten mit Beachtung der Hygieneregeln auch weiterhin gehalten werden. Bayerns Ministerpr\u00e4sident Markus\u00a0S\u00f6der<\/span>\u00a0betonte in diesem Zusammenhang die Bedeutung der Versammlungs- und Religionsfreiheit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
