{"id":13216,"date":"2020-11-22T10:06:59","date_gmt":"2020-11-22T09:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mwehle.eu\/wp\/?p=13216"},"modified":"2020-11-22T10:07:41","modified_gmt":"2020-11-22T09:07:41","slug":"scottish-judges-rule-lockerbie-documents-will-remain-secret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wehle.ee\/wp\/?p=13216","title":{"rendered":"Scottish judges rule Lockerbie documents will remain secret"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2020\/nov\/22\/scottish-judges-rule-lockerbie-documents-will-remain-secret\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guardian<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Scotland\u2019s most senior judges have upheld a secrecy order signed by the foreign secretary,\u00a0Dominic Raab, to withhold intelligence documents believed to implicate a Palestinian terror group in the Lockerbie bombing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The documents are thought to have been sent by King Hussein of\u00a0Jordan\u00a0to the UK government after <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">Pan Am Flight 103<\/span> was blown up over the town of Lockerbie on December 1988, killing all 259 passengers and crew, and 11 townspeople.<\/p>\n<p>The documents are believed to allege that a Jordanian intelligence agent within the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), called <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">Marwan Khreesat<\/span>, made the bomb. Critics of Megrahi\u2019s 2001 conviction believe the PFLP-GC carried out the attack on behalf of the Tehran regime in revenge for the destruction of an Iranian airliner by the US warship the <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">USS Vincennes<\/span> in <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">July 1988<\/span>, but this was covered up in order to implicate Libya.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The new appeal hearing was ordered after the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission decided Megrahi\u2019s conviction was arguably a miscarriage of justice, because of significant discrepancies in the evidence of the Crown\u2019s key witness, a Maltese shopkeeper called Tony Gauci, who alleged Megrahi had bought clothes put in the suitcase bomb.<\/p>\n<p>The SCCRC also said the Crown had failed to disclose Gauci and his brother were offered reward payments totalling $3m for testifying.
