\"\"<\/a>Dugin leaned over and said: \u2018Eduard, your task as a warrior and kshatriya<\/em> is to lead people; and I am but a priest, magician, Merlin, I have a woman\u2019s role to explain and console.\u2019<\/p>\n

In fact, the party was arguably Dugin\u2019s brainchild \u2013<\/span> the name was his idea, as was the flag: a black hammer and sickle in a white circle on a red background, evoking the Nazi swastika. It was not going to win them any elections, in a country that lost 20 million to Hitler\u2019s fascism; but that was not the NBP\u2019s goal. The official NBP salute was a straight arm raised with a fist, alongside a cry of \u2018Da, Smert!\u2019<\/em><\/span> (Yes! Death!). Inside the group\u2019s headquarters, the highest-ranking<\/span> party member present was always referred to as the Bunkerf\u00fchrer<\/em>. The veneer of fascism was very much calculated \u2013 it was a bohemian \u2018political art project\u2019, in Dugin\u2019s words. He, according to Limonov, \u2018seemed to have deciphered and translated the bright shock that Soviet youth experience when they pronounce the initials \u201cSS\u201d\u2019.<\/p>\n

The NBP\u2019s ironic stance towards fascism, though, was also a carefully calculated ploy. The salutes, the slogans (\u2018Stalin, Beria, Gulag!\u2019 was one) were so odd and over the top that they verged on parody. Equating their party with fascist symbols, however, was a pose \u2013 pioneered by Dugin \u2013 that would come to define Russia\u2019s image of authoritarian rule under Putin in the coming decade. The NBP was a \u2018sight gag\u2019 that undercut criticism by making it seem \u2013 ever so slightly \u2013 as though it was missing the point. Calling the swastika-waving, goose-stepping NBP members \u2018fascists\u2019 frankly sounded so odd that no one ever did it, for fear of looking ridiculous. Both men were instinctive haters of conventional wisdom. They loved to shock. And the movement they founded was a m\u00e9lange of each man\u2019s upbringing: Dugin a product of the overly intellectual Moscow bohemia of the 1980s; Limonov, the pre-AIDS Lower East Side of Manhattan in the 1970s transplanted to central Moscow.<\/p>\n
