Delivered by the colonel-in-chief of the Parachute Regiment, whose soldiers killed fourteen on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribunemag.co.uk\/2022\/01\/bloody-sunday-fifty-years-anniversary-derry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloody Sunday<\/a> and nine in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribunemag.co.uk\/2021\/05\/the-ballymurphy-verdict-exposes-the-reality-of-state-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ballymurphy Massacre<\/a>, <span style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">Prince Charles<\/span> ventriloquised a Tory ultimatum: the Troubles are over, and our geriatric troops will be protected from \u2018vexatious\u2019 claims alleging illegality and war crimes.<\/p>\n<p>This ultimatum came in the form of the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Bill which, promising conditional amnesty for crimes committed during the period known euphemistically as the \u2018Troubles\u2019, cleared its first House of Commons hurdle yesterday by 285 votes to 208, sans support from all the parties based in the North of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The day after the Queen\u2019s Speech, the bereaved families of the Ballymurphy Massacre quietly marked the one-year anniversary of a landmark inquest which found all victims \u2018entirely innocent\u2019\u2014more than fifty years after the British media ran credulous stories, fed by the British army, which cast civilian victims as <span style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">death-deserving<\/span> IRA gunmen.<\/p>\n<p>What does this bill mean, then, to victims\u2019 families, who protested yesterday\u2014in Derry, Belfast and London\u2014against what they are calling Britain\u2019s \u2018Bill Of Shame\u2019?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s very disturbing,\u2019 John Teggart, who was 11 when his father was shot 14 times by the Parachute Regiment during the Ballymurphy Massacre, tells\u00a0<i>Tribune<\/i>. \u2018They\u2019ve made it quite blatant that they\u2019re trying to black out the war crimes committed by state actors like the British Army and those involved in running paramilitaries who were state agents.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tribune: Unlike most years, the recent Queen\u2019s Speech did not pass without remark in Ireland.
