Typically when a governor overwhelmingly wins re-election, they spend their election night victory speech teasing what they will do in their next term.<\/p>\n

Not so with Gov. Gavin Newsom and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday. Both used their post-victory<\/span> glow to throw shade on each other. But as they ponder their next political moves, they offered a preview of where their fight \u2014 and the larger political narrative \u2014 is heading: over what \u201cfreedom\u201d really means in this moment.<\/p>\n

It is a battle that \u2014 depending on whether President Biden decides to seek re-election<\/span> \u2014 could be fought all the way to the White House.<\/p>\n

To DeSantis, freedom has found a home in Florida, which he boasted Tuesday has become \u201cthe promised land\u201d for people \u201cfleeing states and cities governed by leftist politicians.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve seen their taxpayers abused. They\u2019ve seen medical authoritarianism imposed and they\u2019ve seen American principles discarded,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cThe woke agenda has caused millions of Americans to leave these jurisdictions for greener pastures.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you turn up the sound you can almost hear DeSantis say, \u201c(cough) California (cough).\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike those living in leftist-governed locales, DeSantis said, in Florida, \u201cwe have embraced freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeSantis uses \u201cfreedom\u201d largely in economic and cultural terms. He means the absence of taxes and government mandates. It\u2019s a familiar refrain in conservative circles. In 2005, President George W. Bush used the\u00a0word \u201cfreedom\u201d 27 times in his 21-minute<\/span><\/a>\u00a0inaugural address, per the transcript on NPR.org. That\u2019s seven more times than Martin Luther King Jr. did in his seminal\u00a0\u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech<\/a>\u00a0in 1963.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have maintained law and order. We have protected the rights of parents. We have respected our taxpayers and we reject woke ideology,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cWe\u2019d fight the woke in the legislature. We fight the woke in the schools. We fight the woke in the corporations. We will never ever surrender to the woke mob.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlorida,\u201d he said, \u201cis where woke goes to die.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a quick reminder of what woke really means, let\u2019s ask Oakland Rep. Barbara Lee, whose explanation is in\u00a0the Merriam-Webster dictionary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing woke means understanding all the issues each and every day and fighting against injustice each and every day knowing what we\u2019re dealing with,\u201d Lee said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
