Police also took away a vaping device and cannabis product that hospital staff had already confiscated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-h26idz\">While the police department later dropped the citation, which would have required the cancer patient to appear in court, reports of the incident fueled debate over the continued criminalization of cannabis in Kansas, one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/health\/state-medical-marijuana-laws.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">three US states<\/a>\u00a0that has not legalized the product in any context.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-h26idz\">While he was glad the charge against his father was dropped, Lee Bretz, the patient\u2019s son, said the incident was \u201chumiliating\u201d for his father and left him \u201cpretty upset\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-h26idz\">His father, who has terminal, inoperable cancer, was issued a \u201cmust appear\u201d citation for drug possession, Bretz said. \u201cHe can\u2019t make it to court. He\u2019s bedridden. He can\u2019t move his legs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-h26idz\">\u201cYou\u2019d think they would have shown a lot of compassion and not done anything,\u201d his son said of the officers who responded to the incident.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Why? Why would anyone expect that the hospital staff or police would have shown a lot of compassion? What would give anyone that expectation? I&#8217;ve seen this for decades: &#8222;it should be different&#8220;, &#8222;that&#8217;s just not fair&#8220;, &#8222;don&#8217;t they understand?&#8220;, &#8222;that&#8217;s not the way it&#8217;s supposed to be&#8220; reactions as Americans fail to comprehend the vast gap between systemic truths and their own childish fantasies. Perhaps if we just close our eyes and pretend, problems will go away. Everything will get better. This incident must be the exception, not the rule.
