But U.S. involvement gradually escalated under three presidents: Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Ellsberg quickly reached the conclusion that the Vietnam War had never been a civil war, as historians had usually described it, but \u201ca war of foreign aggression, American aggression.\u201d He began to believe that the war had been wrong from the start \u2014 not just strategically misguided but immoral.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/daniel-ellsberg-pentagon-papers-dead-1234694265\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rolling Stone<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI think I was running the Xerox machine, and <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">[my son]<\/span> was collating. Or it might have been the other way around,\u201d he told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/01\/19\/579101965\/daniel-ellsberg-explains-why-he-leaked-the-pentagon-papers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NPR<\/a>\u00a0in 2017. \u201cHe was then 13. And my daughter, who was 10, was cutting off top secret from the tops and bottoms of the pages with the scissors. The reason they were there was that I expected to be in prison very shortly\u2026 I wanted them to know that their father was doing something in a businesslike <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">way \u2014<\/span> a calm, sober way that I thought had to be done. And I did let my older son know in particular that it might \u2014 in fact, would probably result in my going to prison. He submitted a question, in writing, to the Joint Chiefs. The question was drafted by Ellsberg: \u201cIf your plans for general [nuclear war] are carried out as planned, how many people will be killed in the Soviet Union and China?\u2019\u2019 Ellsberg was shown the chiefs\u2019 answer in the form of a graph\u2014two hundred and seventy-five million would be killed initially, and fifty million more within six months, from injuries and fallout.
