{"id":3006,"date":"2018-08-19T07:31:53","date_gmt":"2018-08-19T04:31:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mwehle.eu\/wp\/?p=3006"},"modified":"2018-08-19T07:33:15","modified_gmt":"2018-08-19T04:33:15","slug":"language-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wehle.ee\/wp\/?p=3006","title":{"rendered":"Language"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/aug\/18\/new-york-governor-andrew-cuomo-america-never-that-great\">Guardian<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI want to be very clear,\u201d Cuomo said on Friday in a call with reporters. \u201cOf course America is great and of course America has always been great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His original phrasing, he said, had been \u201cinartful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo made the offending remark on Wednesday, at the end of a speech focused on his opposition to\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0and delivered to an audience gathered to witness the signing of a bill introducing new penalties for sex trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Riffing on Trump\u2019s famous campaign slogan, the governor said: \u201cWe\u2019re not going to make America great again \u2013 it was never that great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To gasps and laughter, he continued: \u201cWe have not reached greatness. We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just last night I was reflecting on how mystifying some English is to me, as I was unable to interpret this phrase on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lithuanian_language\">Wikipedia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Proto-Balto-Slavic is easily reconstructible with important proofs in historic prosody.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While this is English I was unable to parse it. I had the same reaction to Cuomo&#8217;s statement as well as his &#8222;walking back&#8220; his statement. (How to translate &#8222;walking back a statement&#8220; into German? Russian? Lithuanian?). What does it mean for a nation to have &#8222;always been great&#8220;? What is the test for this?
