Microsoft-owned GitHub has blocked Spanish users from accessing an app designed to help Catalan independence protesters.<\/p>\n

It follows\u00a0a takedown request<\/a>\u00a0by the Spanish military police.<\/p>\n

Tsunami Democr\u00e0tic used GitHub to develop tools to co-ordinate protest action, including an encrypted communication app.<\/p>\n

The group helped to organise pro-independence rallies at Barcelona airport, which saw\u00a0dozens of flights cancelled<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Protestors demonstrating against the imprisonment of nine Catalan separatist leaders have copied tactics devised by demonstrators in Hong Kong, including blocking airports<\/a>\u00a0and using encrypted messaging.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time a company has removed an app linked to protests.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month,\u00a0Apple removed an app<\/a>\u00a0which protesters in Hong Kong used to track police movements, claiming it violated the company’s rules.<\/p>\n

Tsunami Democr\u00e0tic\u00a0told TechCrunch<\/a>\u00a0that users of Apple’s iPhone can’t yet download the app because the „politics of the App Store is very restrictive“.<\/p>\n

The app is currently only available as a raw Android file, and users cannot download it via the Google Play store either.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
