Punishment you felt was clean.<\/p>\n<p>The decks, the catwalks, and the narrow light<br \/>\nComposed a ship. This was a mutinous crew<br \/>\nTroubling the captains for plain decencies,<br \/>\nA Mayflower brim with pilgrims headed out<br \/>\nTo establish new theocracies to west,<br \/>\nA Noah\u2019s ark coasting the topmost seas<br \/>\nTen miles above the sodomites and fish.<br \/>\nThese inmates loved the only living doves.<\/p>\n<p>Like all men hunted from the world you made<br \/>\nA good community, voyaging the storm<br \/>\nTo no safe Plymouth or green Ararat;<br \/>\nTrouble or calm, the men with Bibles prayed,<br \/>\nThe gaunt politicals construed our hate.<br \/>\nThe opposite of all armies, you were best<br \/>\nOpposing uniformity and yourselves;<br \/>\nPrison and personality were your fate.<\/p>\n<p>You suffered not so physically but knew<br \/>\nMaltreatment, hunger, ennui of the mind.<br \/>\nWell might the soldier kissing the hot beach<br \/>\nErupting in his face damn all your kind.<br \/>\nYet you who saved neither yourselves nor us<br \/>\nAre equally with those who shed the blood<br \/>\nThe heroes of our cause. Your conscience is<br \/>\nWhat we come back to in the armistice.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014Karl Shapiro<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Shapiro writes as one who accepted being drafted and who then filled the role of a soldier in the South Pacific.
